The original version of the song is by Guns N' Roses and it's a third single from their 1987 debut album Appetite for Destruction. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and reached #6 on UK Singles Chart after its release on August 20, 1988.

The song has been covered by many artists, among them are Sheryl Crow and Taken by Trees.

Sheryl did her cover in 1999, which earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Her version was used for the ending credits of the movie Big Daddy. It was also featured in the 1990 film State of Grace.

Indie pop artist Taken by Trees/Victoria Bergsman's version was used in the trailer for the remake of the Wes Craven film The Last House on the Left.

She's got a smile that it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories
When everything was as bright as the bluest sky
Now and then when I see her face
It takes me away to that special place
If I stared too long
I'd probably break down and cry

Hohh sweet child of mine
Hohh sweet child of mine

Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place
Where as a child I'd hide
And pray for the thunder
And the rain
To quietly pass me by
And she's got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I hate to look into those eyes
And see an ounce of pain

Hoohh sweet child of mine
Hooh sweet love of mine
Hoohh sweet love of mine
Hooh sweet love of mine
